Internet and Creativity
"They say that “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy”, but what happens if Jack has too much play and no work at all?" An argumentative essay I wrote for an English class during my Foundation years.
“The Internet is often blamed for the lack of creativity and critical thinking in today’s youth.”
Do you agree with the statement?
You should write at
least 350 words.
Introduction :
-
Hook : They say that “All work and no play makes
Jack a dull boy”, but what happens if Jack has too much play and no work at
all?
-
Thesis statement : the Internet actually
enhances creativity and critical thinking due to having massive creative
content, providing a place for international issues discussion and options that
enhance creativity.
Paragraph 1 : Massive creative content
- The Internet is basically a hub of creativity
- Massive amount of creative content and ideas that will influence the youth to do the same
- Creativity again is about finding the connection between two seemingly unrelated items hence, the redundancy of information in the Internet helps a lot in this process as you have a lot of resources
Paragraph 2 : Discusses international
issues
- Promotes critical thinking because of discussions
- The Internet provides information on several perspectives over a topic
- May not even come across these issues in everyday life
Paragraph 3 : Options that enhance
creativity and critical thinking skills
- Open-source softwares
- Strategy-based online games which requires critical thinking to win a game
- Web-designing giving a lot of options for users to personalize their blogs/social media profile – making them more creative
-
Youth themselves should use the Internet wisely
so that it can enhance their creativity and critical thinking capabilities
The Essay :
They say that “All work and no
play makes Jack a dull boy”, but what happens if Jack has too much play and no
work at all? This argument seems to be applied to the current generation ever
so often, with the growth of technology that seems to be solving every life
problems effortlessly. In fact, the Internet is often blamed for the lack of
creativity and critical thinking in today’s youth, which I have to disagree
completely for several reasons. In contradiction to this statement, the
Internet actually improves these skills due to having massive creative content,
providing a place for international issues discussion and available options that
helps in enhancing them.
First
and foremost, the Internet contains a massive amount of creative content and
ideas which will inspire the youth to do the same. Since creativity itself is
finding the connection between seemingly unrelated items, the excess of
information in the Internet means that there would be more resources to find
connections between. Several websites in
the Internet also encourage creativity expression, where they are able to share
works of art and getting recognition for it. This would help in developing the
youth’s creativity skills as they desire to make more.
Other
than that, the Internet also works as a platform to discuss international
issues which promotes critical thinking among youth. Topics such as feminism or
anti-violence garner a lot of attention and probes the youth to use their
critical thinking skills to find a solution towards the problem. Without the
Internet, the youth may not even come across such issues in everyday life hence
not even having the chance to take a while to think about it.
Last
but not least, the Internet also provides options that enhance creativity and
critical thinking such as online games and open-source softwares. Strategy
online games for example, require the player to think critically in order to
win the game, coming up with creative strategies to defeat the opponent. There
are also several open-source softwares such as painting softwares in which the
youth can express their creativity and activities such as web-designing also
gives them the option to personalize their blogs, making them more creative in
return.
So when
Jack meets the Internet, would he still be a dull boy? Of course not! In fact,
he might be the most creative and the best critical thinker among the boys his
age. With the correct balance and control over how he uses the Internet, the
youth of today can certainly develop inept creativity and critical thinking
skills for them to excel in the future.
