Review : Summer 2016 Anime First Impressions!

ReLIFE

| I'm sorry but, I can somehow guess the fate of this two. |
ReLIFE gives me an absolutely different aftertaste from anything else I've ever watched. It's probably because I watch high school life anime all the time, but I guess it's more because it hits closer to home more than I thought.
I love the concept of the story - though seemingly common, I like that the story is not a matter of time slip, but the fact that the medicine merely changes the appearance of the main character to make him look younger. This may seem trivial but if you take the time to think about again, you'd probably understand what I mean by this.
Also, I love that the story seemed so simple, but the situation alternates nicely between comedic and serious moments. The habits the main character has as an adult obviously does not help him in his high school life, which works as a wonderful comic relief - yet it's hard to remove the sense that the ReLIFE experiment is definitely a serious one. With the sudden change of atmosphere from time to time when stressed on the experiment, the viewers are constantly reminded that it's not something to be entirely joyful about.

Let the time comes when I would be able to get these words typed down. (I am definitely struggling with vocabulary when I try to write this one.) All in all, ReLIFE is something I'll absolutely watch throughout summer!

LoveLive! Sunshine

| High quality animation yay |
Well, it did not ruin my expectations, yet it did not exceed my expectations either.
The first episode of LoveLive Sunshine for me is normal. Not much surprises if you've followed enough of the official sites, and NicoNico broadcasts which leaves no room for imagination. The only time I was fairly surprised is when Riko mentioned that she is from Otokinozaka, which I think I've known earlier, but still allows several thoughts such as - how is it possible that she is in the same school with the LoveLive! winner u's, but to not have a single clue on what school idols are.
Other than that, as expected, the characters' quirks are overwhelming at the first half of the episode. The pacing seems so fast, what's with the characters appearing one after another, and there's a lot of references from the former LoveLive anime which doesn't show much of originality. The second half of the episode seems to be better, but the pace differs greatly from the first half it made feel confused.

I mean, this may come off as rude, but the voices in Aquors have this kind of similarity where you can't really separate one from the other. I remember how different u's members voices are from each other that I can definitely point out who is singing when, but it's close to impossible when it comes to Aquors songs. I heard that it's good in term of synchronization, but I do wonder on how it works with the voice balance of the characters..
I should probably take more time to get into all this, so I'd probably continue watching after all-!
B-Project
I need to get my grip together and start typing but I still
can’t get over that episode just yet. Please allow me a few minutes of calming
down. (calms down)

| Already fangirling when the OP plays// |
The first episode is very good in my opinion. The pacing is
nice, and it doesn't overwhelm at all. I love how they simply introduce all the
characters, but to later focus on the first unit, Kitakore.
The story hints on
the other units as well, on how Tsubasa is lucky to have Kitakore on her first
job because the others seems to bicker all the time. This allows the viewers to
look forward to the other units as well.
The animation is very well done. Not your excellent fluid
animation, but not your half-baked low quality animation either. They put a lot
of effort on that OP dance sequence, with minimal usage of CG, and more to
drawn animation. A lot of effort is done on the imagery scenes as well- which
is surprisingly not that exaggerating and very relatable. That’s a lot of
points for storyboarding and visuals.
And of course, B-Project plays its strongest card the best –
it’s music. I absolutely have no complaints. The background music is so well
done, and the character songs performance is top-notch. It’s also a well-done
choice to pick Kitakore as the first focus, considering that they have the
strongest vocals between all the members, and it’s super hard to not be
entranced with their powerful voices.

Tsubasa seems like an excellent main character for now too.
Instead of getting all sparkly-eyed on the idols, I love the fact that she
feels that she can never be able to fit in with all these sparkly idols. She
worries a lot, but it does not stop her in her tracks. Also, she’s positive
enough to find the good in everything, which leaves a really good opinion of
the viewers towards her.
Also, I love all the random surprises! We all know enough
that B-Project is obviously going to be all the idols chasing after the main
characters – but the first episode really does not show much of this. Sure
there’s Kento being all flirty but that’s just his nature. And then after the
ending sequence we get the little peck on cheek scene and all hail breaks free
this is obviously going to get crazy.
Also, did I mention that ending card? I literally choked
myself my dad had to ask me what’s wrong.

Rewrite
Rewrite reminds me on why I don’t really watch dramas that much
– oh the agony of a really long episode..

| This question definitely caught my attention |
So, Rewrite. First things first, the animation needs a lot
of time to get used to. It has a lot of movement but it’s not fluid, so I don’t
know whether to call it good or not. There is effort placed alright, so I’ll
just stick with that. Although it remains inconsistent, there are several
scenes which are well-animated – like the weapon activation scene/the supernatural
occurrence – which is pretty eye-catching. I do wonder why they don’t place that
good animation earlier into the episode though. Now if the story is good, I probably
wouldn’t mind it that much.
Being a visual novel based anime,
it follows the normal pattern of having a lot of pretty girls with obvious
quirks, which is not really surprising. Also the cliché “I don’t feel like I
fit in”, transfer student, fan service and childhood friend. And delinquent
friend. Also the justice-is-served character, and super nice homeroom teacher.
It obviously predictable, it gets pretty boring after a while.
The few nice things about this
series is probably the addition of other themes – the supernatural occurrences
for example, which was super scary if you’re watching it from the point of view
of someone who dislikes horror. I had to suppress my screams watching them. Other
than that is the BL service, which is sort of clichéd too but it works well in
luring female viewers who wouldn’t mind staying for the treat.

The fighting scenes in the series
is nice, but the truth is the fact that I didn’t pay attention to them. It’s
really hard to really, especially when your mind is occupied on why this is
happening in the first place. It does not help that the small little hints are
given for several matters which creates even more confusion than when it is not
given at all.
In conclusion, I have
so many things to question at the moment, but I have to hold back the urge to
go all Wikipedia over this so I do hope it gets better – or I might read it up
at Wiki after all!
Fukigen na Momonokean
This series is just right for me.
Like I once said in my earlier review of Summer 2016 animes,
Fukigen no Momonokean is a nice change of pace with all the sparkly series –
yes, you, B-Project – that’s airing this season.

Ayakashi/yokai themed animes
had always been my type of anime too, so I’m glad that there’s at least one of
such anime this season.
The story’s main character,
Ashiya Hanae is voiced by Kaji Yuki – which at first, distracted me from the
story. I don’t know if this happens to anyone else but whenever I listen to a
familiar voice, I get to this sort of an entranced situation where I start to
wonder a lot of things like “Eh, he’s voicing quite a simple character this
time,” or “Did he voice anyone else this season?” I’m pretty sure that’s just
me though. I’m sorry that that’s completely unrelated to the story but eh, why
not.
Also, I feel somewhat funny
having Kaji Yuki voicing a character named Hanae, and wonder what will happen
if Hanae Natsuki voices him instead. Yes, welcome to the seiyuu fandom.
Alright, moving on. I like Fukigen
no Momonokean in the simple things/themes it places in the story. For example,
the mother who expresses things in flower language which for me, would entirely
be the mangaka’s self-interest since it seems unrelated to the series for now.
Personally, I also like flower language so I don’t really mind, but I have a
feeling that some people might not welcome this sort of unnecessary theme.
Other than that, there’s the rule
of the Momonokean room where you have to go out using a small door. I really
love details like these, since it makes the room seem special. By the end of
the series, we are introduced to the fact that Abeno is not some middle-aged
guy, but is actually a high school first-year student, who is also Ashiya’s
classmate. It’s pretty hard to guess this, since Abeno looks so mature and
grown-up – and voiced by Maeno!
I guess it’s because Abeno is
shown to have very minimal movements and seemingly older than his age, which
sort of derails the fact that he’s actually way younger than he looks. It would
be pretty fun to make people guess his age before watching the series.

Other than that, there’s of
course the yokai/human dynamic of the series. Of course, every yokai-themed anime
has this, but it really doesn’t get old. It’s melancholic and sad, and it gets
you thinking about yourself – on how you can relate on this concept when you
deal with other beings aside yourself. The parting scene for Ashiya and the
furball is pretty hilarious, what’s with him screaming for it to not go and
all. It was really cute.
Then again, humour is also one of
the great points of this episode. When the homeroom teacher explains that they
have a transfer student who is a child of a florist, has black hair and a
sickly body named Hanae – the entire class expected him to be a girl, and was
devastated when they figure out that he’s a guy. Hanae is sort of a feminine
name so it’s pretty understandable on why they made that mistake. Though, most of
it is actually due to the teacher’s misleading words.
Well, Fukigen na Momonokean is
pretty enjoyable, so I really can’t wait for more~!
Hatsukoi Monster
I feel like I’m watching
something I’m really not supposed to.. like in an even more dangerous sense.
So, Hatsukoi Monster. (clears
throat) I lost it one minute into the episode I had to click pause and calm myself
down. Goodness, this story is messed up. I have so many questions right now but
I have no idea where to start.

So, Hatsukoi Monster. A story of
a completely spoiled high-school girl who fell in love with a super handsome
guy who is actually a fifth-grader. One thing I can only say here is, “ANIME.”
I mean, look at him! There is
absolutely no way a fifth-grader can have that body stature! Plus, his mental state is completely a fifth grader as well. The only thinkable reason for that could only be that he’s out in a coma or something which made him
start his education as a fifth-grader but I don’t even know if that’s accurate
enough. I mean, I really need a reason for this.
In terms of story however, I
might actually watch it after all. Like I said, I probably won’t mind watching
for the shenanigans since they ended up being quite hilarious. It’s like watching teenagers saying and doing
these fifth-graders words and actions which ended up being super weird. It’s
probably the first time I’m watching an anime being unable to show any reaction
whatsoever. I’m just there, you know – alternating between a laugh and an awkward
smile.
Also it
does not help that they’re voiced by the seiyuu senpais Takahiro Sakurai,
Tomokazu Sugita and Morikubo Shoutarou – it’s like being unable to unhear what
has been heard.
Then again, the romantic scenes
in this series is sort of forced. Highly predictable, but you still enjoy the
dokis that comes along after it happens. Not entirely bad for otome game lovers
– but would probably not go well with other viewers. They’re obviously going to
label this as cliché and decide not to continue watching.

That little scene at the very end
helps out in lightening the entire episode. I say this because there might be
people who are uncomfortable with the dirty word used throughout this episode,
so it clears up the fact that they are actually NOT supposed to say it.
Hence, Kazu makes a tally which shows the
amount of times they spoke that word, telling them the more they say it, the
more they are in trouble. In the end, Kazu ended up saying it as well by
mistake, increasing a tally for himself. This might turn out as a continuous
gag throughout the series, but whether it turns out for the best of the worst
is something I can't predict.
I’m the kind of person who is
very weak with good voices so I’d probably going to continue watching after
all. Also, did I mention that cute rock-paper-scissors challenge you get to
play with RenRen at the end of the episode? I might just stay even if it’s just
for that.
Amaama to Inazuma
Amaama to Inazuma
Ahhh that was plain lovely (wipes
tears) I love it!
Amaama to Inazuma is probably
going to be one of my real favorites this season. Its first episode
affected me
greatly, to the fact that I am completely in feels mode the entire time. I love
how the everyday life feel is maintained throughout the episode, and how the
story starts with simple yet strong interactions between the characters. |
| Tsumugii--- <3 |
I love everything about this
series. I don’t think I’ve ever watched any series which centers on a single father
before, so it really kept me watching. Tsumugi is adorable and soothing to
watch, and you can help but to love how her father lovingly takes care of her.
It has come to the point where I might not even mind even if there’s no plot
progress at all. I would be all good, even if they’re just going to animate the
trivial little things that happens in their daily lives.
Even if that’s satisfying enough,
Amaama to Inazuma continues to rattle and slowly break into your heart – making
you love this small family and care about them. We all know for now that
Tsumugi lost her mother, but what creates the extra impact is the added fact
that a mere six months has passed since, and the fact that Tsumugi believes that
they can still contact her mother by writing letters. This may sound trivial,
yet these facts knocks in your mind that they are still facing difficulties in
trying to accept the reality that fell upon them – hence making you worry about
them more.
As soothing and adorable Tsumugi
is, Kotori presence soothes me as well. I love how much she thinks of her
mother (to the point that it brought her into tears) and how she feels a sense
of responsibility upon certain things (not letting Tsumugi down even if she
doesn’t know how to cook). Also, I like how she is involved into the main story
– almost effortlessly and naturally, which makes it feel absolutely right for
her to be there in the first place. I mean, it could’ve been just me, but as
usual, I really love small details.

Oh, and that first-time rice
cooking challenge is perfect. I don’t know whether it clicked to anyone else,
but it definitely clicked to me. I was around Kotori’s age when I tried cooking
rice for the first time too – and I faced the exact problems that she faced. It
felt refreshing to see it happen which reminds me, “Ah, I must’ve been like this
as well.” Watching this scene comes with a pang of nostalgia, and I was
literally rooting her on while she’s doing her best which was absolutely
engaging.
I cried a lot. I mean, in the
touched kind of way. The story is very engaging and I really loved it.
Amaama to Inazuma is definitely the
one you should pay attention to this summer!
Bananya
Look at me running away from watching the more serious
animes and to the simple-looking Bananya.
But I HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO REGRETS.

Bananya is more to a soothing anime that you feel like
watching after a long day at work. I love how it’s based on narration instead
of monologue – which is obviously easy to follow. I do wonder if Bananya is a
children anime though, yet I wouldn’t mind even if it is. I’m saying this from
the point of view of an 18-year-old girl, YES, I’d still watch it regardless.
Lately, my mom has been taking
care of this 2-year-old child who enjoys the popular educational series,
Pocoyo. Most of time, when it’s my turn to take care of her, I usually end up
watching it as well. One of the great things about it is of course the
narration, which is very similar to Bananya. Narration-styled series are very
nice to watch, so I guess that might play a part in why I like Bananya this
much.

Also, though all Bananya does is
‘Nya!’, he’s voiced by the adorable Kaji Yuki! I was pleasantly surprised when
I saw the cast list at the end of the episode. Like, I know how cute his voice
sounds when he nyaas, but I really didn’t expect it to actually VOICE a cat.
It’s a perfect fit though. I don’t know who the narrator is since I can’t read
kanji, but I’d definitely make time to look him up later.
Bananya is so cute~! I wouldn’t mind watching it at all!
Tales of Zestiria
I am overwhelmed with grief I need time to get over this
series. I think I should watch something soothing for a while.. (watches
Bananya again) Alright, I’m good.
Tales of Zestiria X is amazing. It’s beyond what I consider
a good anime, and I’d call it excellent
right off the bat. I do know as much as the fact that the Tales series is very popular, but I just got into gaming recently so I wasn’t keeping up with all the titles. I’ve watched Tales of Abyss though – which I also consider as very excellent, especially in terms of character development. What’s for sure, Zestiria is definitely on my watch from now on.

In terms of storytelling, Zestiria is probably the best one
so far for now – with an absolutely well-done plot progress and conflict, plus
emotional inflict on the viewers. From the moment the princess sets off a
journey to Griel, I know as much to expect that people are going to die. It’s
so obvious, and I couldn’t expect less than two deaths in the first episode.
But did I expect that almost everyone died in the first episode? No I didn’t.
Like I said, I’m still overcoming my grief so I won’t go any further into that.
Zestiria’s fighting
scenes are amazing! The best thing ever. It was executed very well, and it
showed a lot in terms of the Princess and her knights’ strength and fighting
skills (the fight along the way to Griel). It can be concluded that’s she
fairly strong in comparison, but I really love how this fact changes rapidly in
the next fight.
While the Princess hastily tries
to get away from the tornado, another fight occurs between two seemingly bad
guys which created the sense of a VERY large gap between the Princess’ strength
and theirs. It came to a point that we start to believe that she would never
stand a chance if she were to fight against them, as she came to a standstill
and tries to get away from reality. It makes the situation seems so dire and
serious than before, since the kingdom has a big trouble coming on their way
now.
Also, don’t forget the fire dragon. You have to solve that one too.

male lead and white-haired guy combination attack. It looked really
cool in the opening, and it really caught my attention.

What I’m thinking at the moment
is how I would ever get my hands on the game version of Tales of Zestiria.
That’s some excellent job they did with the anime, alright!
Saiki Kusuo no Psi

Well isn’t that an enjoyable episode (laughs)
Ah, it’s too bad that I’ve came across a few spoilers upon
this series. I think I would’ve enjoyed it even more if I didn’t, but I do
believe I’d still enjoy it regardless. So, even though I have a lot of things
to be said at the moment, let me say the most important thing that crossed my
mind while watching.

WHAT’S WITH THAT
EXCELLENT VOICE-ACTING I KNOW IT’S HIROSHI KAMIYA BUT STILL.
Kamiya’s voice acting is amazing as always, and very
pin-point it practically scares me. If I were to imagine anyone else voicing
Saiki Kusuo at this point, I can’t even state out a single name. Voicing Kusuo
requires an emotionless and somewhat monotone voice, which is pretty hard to
pull off in trying to balance it so that it still sounds human. That being said
however, Kamiya pulls it off so perfectly that he practically sounds like Siri.
I wouldn’t mind having his voice on my Siri app. Really. I WOULDN’T MIND THAT AT ALL.
So, Saiki Kusuo. A psychic boy by birth who has ultimately
every psychic abilities there is which can be controlled at will. Despite
having all of it however, he stops being able to feel happy or surprised on the
things that occurred to him, which he is very conscious of. He considers
himself as being the unhappiest man on earth because of this. I personally like
how Kusuo’s personality works in this story. Instead of turning into a
narcissist due to his capabilities, he ended up being quite a pessimist instead
which is pretty interesting. Also I love that he didn’t use his abilities for
himself – instead, uses it for the sake of others though he is not conscious of
it – and he’s not even inclined to use it for personal gain – hoping that his
father would stop thinking of using it for ‘better’ purposes.

The Obviously Main Character trope is also used pretty well
in this series, having Saiki Kusuo own a striking hair colour plus shades and
even antennas. He has absolutely no resemblance to his own birth parents too
which is pretty hilarious. One would even question their relation with each
other, but then again this is anime so nothing’s weird with that really.

In conclusion, I enjoyed Saiki Kusuo. And it seems like my
family does too so yes, Saiki Kusuo is definitely on my list this summer.
Tsukiuta The
Animation
Well look who just got entranced with another series,
Tsukiuta really is good after all!

I heard from a friend that Tsukiuta is going to be a story about the idols’ everyday lives, instead of a musical. At first, I was pretty doubtful on how the outcome would be, so I was pleasantly surprised that it actually turned out pretty good. Our first episode turns out to be a story of a young boy’s first encounter with the Tsukiuta member, mainly Kakeru and how he ends up admiring him in the end. It seems like Tsukiuta is aiming for the no love interest route, which might work even better with fans rather than actually having one.
I love the relaxing feel Tsukiuta gives me. Instead of being
excessively sparkly and farfetched, the idols in Tsukiuta seems more relatable
– as they enjoy simple things in life like normal people do, such as eating
colourful manjus and having fun at an amusement park. It gives you an image
that you can probably get along with this kind of people which changes the way
you look at them and even the way you support them. Other than supporting them
like idols, you have this feeling of supporting a friend as well which also
makes you happy in return.

Also, I’m giving credit on
Syunpei’s sister’s voice actress. Her acting made me feel so relatable to the
story in an instant. I can’t read her name as always but a part of it is in katakana.
Though, I really have to look her up because her name is absolutely out of my
league.

can’t wait for the next episode!
Shakin’ Sugar Sugar!
Cheer Danshi
First things first, I enjoyed my
time.

| Haru-kun's one-shot? :3 |
His relationship with Kazu is
excellent – to the point that it would be obviously greatly misunderstood. I
can’t help but to love how Kazu just seems to rotate his actions around what
Haru does, and how he stayed by his side so that he won’t feel left out after
he got out of the judo club. Kazu personally wanted to start cheerleading
himself, so in a way, it’s a win-win situation for the both of them.
Wataru’s personality and
existence seems very interesting as well. Being the logical and intelligent
member of the team, he’s pretty refreshing to watch – what’s with his positive
attitude towards joining the club, and how he works as a comic relief with his
seriousness and love for new things. After Haru decides to join the club, the
team finally reaches three members with more to come. With
that excellent character introduction, it wouldn’t be far-fetched to look forward to the other members as well.

Fudanshi Koukou Seikatsu
Well, that turned out better than
I thought. I might like this series after all.
Fudanshi Koukou Seikatsu lives up
to its name – it’s just the everyday life of a fudanshi high school student.
There’s no surprises nor anything of the sort, so it’s probably something that
you enjoy in a simple kind of way. As a male fan of BL, there’s a lot of
troubles that he faces in his life including getting mistaken as a girl or
misunderstood as being interested in guys as well. In a way, there would be
zero possibility for you to ever relate to his troubles when you’re not a
fudanshi – yet it might not entirely be the case either.
There is still a way for you to
relate to the jokes the story is getting at. If you take the roundabout way,
you can find these kind of jokes pretty universal, really, since they occur a
lot in our everyday lives. Like, whatever you buy will be judged anyways though
of course people try their best not to show it on their faces. What happened in
Fudanshi is the worst case scenario, when the store worker shows exactly what
they’re thinking, embarrassing him in return.
There’s also the
getting misunderstood online when people can’t guess your gender due to the gap
between your profile info and your updates. I have more than a few friends who
are usually mistaken as the opposite gender online and honestly it really made
a good laugh. It’s frustrating, of course – but as time passes they’d jokingly
tell this story themselves, feeling weird that people actually made that
mistake when it’s actually pretty obvious on WHY they did it.
Being a short anime series, Fudanshi has a simple animation
which is more than enough. For now, we’ve only been introduced to the main
character and his unnamed close friend but it seems like there’s more to come.
Whether Gucchi would be able to grant his dream will still remain in question –
but there’s a high possibility that he will anyways so I don’t think he should
worry about that.
Also, credit to Hatano Wataru for voicing a fudanshi.
(laughs) Priceless. I’ve known as much as the fact that Hatano has voiced a lot
of BL drama CDs so it’s slightly ironic that he’s
voicing a fudanshi for this one. Personally, I knew him from Dance with Devils
which is pretty recent, and has loved his voice ever since.
Well, it seems like I will watch this after all. It’s
completely safe for work, so I have nothing to worry about that. Plus, it’s
really short so I’d probably watch it alongside Bananya and OZMAFIA?
OZMAFIA!!
My first thought is this: Eh, it’s surprisingly normal?
Well, I heard that Ozmafia is going to be a series of shorts
so I guess it’s a given but, how should I say it.. I guess I’ve watched too
many otoge adaptations I didn’t expect something like this to come up. I mean
it’s in a very cute chibi form which is very adorable and lovely, but I can’t
help but to think that the first episode didn’t give that much of an impact.
How I should I say it – I guess I would’ve loved it more if
there’s something that surprised me. For now, Ozmafia’s image in my mind is
entirely just an anime of cute chibis interacting with each other which would
probably be gone in a few minutes. I feel that this series would probably be
overshadowed by the others if I didn’t pay enough attention to it.
That being said however, Ozmafia would still be very
enjoyable for the fans of its original. Like I said, it’s very adorable – and
the animation is very well done. Just perfect for this kind of short series.
That last normal form after the ending theme is something I’d definitely look
forward to from now on, since you can absolutely count me in when it comes to
good voices plus and extremely nice designs.
In a way, Ozmafia is more to a commercial than a series, and
it works pretty well in its own way. I found out that I memorize characters
better when they’re animated and fully voiced, so Ozmafia at least is creating
more fans like myself to be interested in the game version of its adaptation.
What’s for sure, I’m dying to know what happens in Caramia-sensei’s route.
I would never mind a short series and I would never ever
will so Ozmafia sticks on the list. I’d probably watch it in one go though!
